Chiropractic care can effectively treat a variety of severe headaches including tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches, and migraines, according to a recent article by Dr. Steven Read.

The article states, “For almost all the kinds of headaches, chiropractic care is considered to the best treatment available, especially when the drugs associated with other forms of treatment increase the risks of strokes etc.”

According to the article, because tension headaches are often caused by contracted and tense muscles in the neck and back, chiropractic care can realign the spinal bones that may be causing the headache by putting pressure on the nerves or tissues. Cervicogenic headaches are caused by abnormalities of the spine, and thus chiropractors can target the source of the problem in the spine and treat them.

A study highlighted in an Associated Content article and released by the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research found that people using chiropractic therapy had reductions in headache frequency and severity compared with patients who took the drug amitriptyline, a commonly prescribed medication for tension headacfhes.
