Study Looks into Light Therapy as Treatment for Nicotine Addiction

A cancer center in Philadelphia is launching a clinical trial using light therapy to reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms and improve smoking cessation rates, according to an article in PhillyBlurbs.com March 5, 2010.

Light therapy has been found to effectively treat people with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which causes feelings of depression, by altering their circadian rhythm and restoring health levels of melatonin. Melatonin regulates your sleep and wake cycles.

SAD Sufferers Try Light Therapy

Season Affective Disorder, SAD, often causes feelings of depression in people when their body’s natural rhythms are disturbed by winter’s shorter days, according to an article, Feb. 15 in the Metrowest Daily News.

The article suggests that light therapy can help people suffering from SAD. Light therapy lamps simulate natural light, and sitting next to a natural light box or lamp for a certain period each day can help restore natural circadian rhythms.

Light Therapy Treating Cancer

Light therapy is gaining popularity in the United States for treating certain lung and skin cancers, according to an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer Jan. 29, 2010.
 
The article describes the light therapy technique, also called photodynamic therapy, which uses light to target tumors in the body without the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.
 
The treatment infuses a patient with medicine that makes the tumor cells sensitive to light, then a couple days later, a doctor threads a flexible fiber near the cancer cells and shines a red laser at the tumor.
