Pilates Builds Strength, Reduces Back, Neck Pain

image

Pilates helps to build strength and relieve pain, according to an article in PennLive.com Jan. 20, 2010.

Pilates is an exercise routine that focuses on strengthening the core muscles deep in the spine, abdomen and pelvis. These muscles are referred to as “core” muscles, as they support posture, balance and movement.

Because Pilates strengthens the core muscles that surround the spine, it can improve posture and relieve pain in the neck and back.

Dr. Michael Lupinaacci of PRISM (Physicians of Rehabilitation, Industrial and Spine Medicine) said that core muscles degenerate as people age, and although someone may be in good shape in other areas of the body, the core muscles are often neglected.

Pilates exercise teaches awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and is designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body.

According to the article, Pilates is also helpful for people with scoliosis. Although Pilates won’t fix the curve in the spine, it improves balance, posture and lung capacity and relieves pain.

In the article, one scoliosis patient said that after a few years of Pilates most of her life-long pain was gone.
