Colonoscopy Patients Should Try Reiki

Reiki can help reduce patients’ anxiety about undergoing a colonoscopy procedure as well as reduce their need for pain medication following the procedure, according to a new study.

The pilot study, published in the January/February issue of Gastroenterology Nursing, was conducted with 21 patients who were undergoing a colonoscopy for the first time.

The researchers found the patients who received Reiki prior to the colonoscopy procedure had lower heart rates, blood pressure and breathing rates than before receiving Reiki.

Reiki, a practice whereby practitioners place their hands on a person body to move energy to help bring the body back into balance, can have healing effects according to an article in the Charlevoix Courier January, 2010.

The article said Reiki can be particularly benefit for someone with chronic health issues as well as cancer patients.
