Phosphorus

Phosphorus is a mineral that helps in the formation of bones and teeth. It also helps in protein synthesis for growth and maintenance of cells and tissues and assists in muscle contraction, regulating the heartbeat and functioning of the kidneys.

Because phosphorus is common in most diets, there is rarely a phosphorus deficiency.

Recommended Intakes

The Food & Nutrition Board at the Institute of the National Academies established recommended dietary allowances for phosphorus for children and adults. They are listed below in milligrams (mg) per day.
